Marine Medical Services was created in 1990 with a vision of providing world-class medical service to specifically meet and satisfy every repatriated seafarers need for medical attention. The Philippines has been known as a major provider of about 300,000 seafarers to man international ships. These seafarers are among those considered by the government as modern day heroes because they help keep our dwindling economy afloat. We take it as our humble contribution to our country’s progress to put up a unit that will cater to every seafarer’s medical needs in order to keep them physically and mentally fit so as not to compromise their jobs. Our beginnings were not without its peaks and valleys. The road to achieving our goals has never been easy but our desire and determination has made us overcome these hurdles and has made our vision turn into reality.

In our endless pursuit to provide post-employment medical and surgical services at par with international standards, we have sought ISO accreditation and subsequently became the first ISO-certified post-repatriation medical clinic in the Philippines on December 8, 1997. Up to now, it remains to be the only ISO-certified post- repatriation medical clinic in the country. On December 2010, we have upgraded our ISO accreditation and Quality Management System to the new ISO 9001:2008 standard to achieve standards of quality that are recognized and respected not only here in the Philippines but throughout the world.

For the past two and a half decades, Marine Medical Services has enjoyed its lofty standing of being the largest clinic that caters exclusively to repatriated seafarers in need of medical assistance.

We have grown with the years in service and we believe that Marine Medical Services’ status would not be where it is now if not for the thousands of seafarers who have expressed satisfaction in our services and the countless support coming from the different manning agencies, the various P & I clubs and the foreign principals who have come and visited us.

Marine Medical Services was conceptualized and made into reality by its Medical Director, Dr. Robert D. Lim. He is a graduate of the UP-PGH Rehabilitation Medicine Department Residency Program and has gone to New York University Medical Center Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine for post-graduate training. He was also a Rehab Fund Fellow at Bellevue Hospital in New York. He was a Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) awardee in Medicine in 1988. He is a Diplomate and Fellow of the Philippine Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine and is a Professor of the UP College of Medicine. He has also held prestigious positions in government and national organizations, namely;

  • Chairman of the Professional Regulation Commission Board of Physical and Occupational Therapy for ten years
  • Chairman, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, UP-PGH Medical Center
  • Chairman, Rehabilitation Medicine Department, Philippine Children’s Medical Center
  • Chairman, Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled
  • President, Philippine Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine
  • President, Philippine Board of Rehabilitation Medicine

With Dr. Lim’s qualifications, he had the privilege of providing his rehabilitation and medical expertise to 3 past Presidents of the Republic, namely: Presidents Ferdinand Marcos, Corazon Aquino and Fidel Ramos, who had confidence and trust in his capabilities.

In our never ending quest to improve our capabilities in providing the best medical care to our repatriated seafarers, we have transferred our main hospital operations to Cardinal Santos Medical Center, an ISO, IIP, PHI certified medical center that shares our vision and has allotted us the whole second floor of their new PCAS (Philippine Center for Advanced Surgery) building.
